The SchoolFood WasteSolutions project – in the spotlight of the RACA delegation in Preiļi

On September 11, 2025, the Preiļi Municipality hosted a visit by the Regional Development Centres Association (RACA) under the theme “Regions with Energy: Smart Development in Preiļi,” during which the project “Solutions for Reducing Food Waste in School Canteens” (SchoolFood WasteSolutions) and its implementation in Preiļi Municipality were presented.

The project aims to improve the school catering approach by introducing a buffet-style meal system in two pilot schools in Preiļi Municipality. This model promotes healthier nutrition for children and reduces food waste. The event was attended by more than 80 participants, including municipal specialists from across Latvia and representatives from two ministries.

Particular attention was drawn to the activity organized by Riebiņi Primary School“Food Tasting and Recipe Testing” — held on the Ieva and Ādams islets in Preiļi Park. Students and guests were offered buffet-style meal recipes developed according to school catering standards. During the tasting, participants could sample the dishes and provide feedback on their suitability for daily school meals.

Project manager Antra Meluškāne emphasized that this initiative not only helps reduce food waste but also fosters children’s awareness and responsible attitude toward resources. The atmosphere was made especially warm and engaging by performances from the Riebiņi Primary School folklore group “Jumaleņa”, which involved the delegation in fun activities. Afterwards, the children enthusiastically enjoyed the meals offered and gave them high praise.

The SchoolFood WasteSolutions project is co-financed by the European Union. The Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021–2027 strengthens cross-border cooperation to promote sustainable, innovative, and inclusive regional development.
