Finnish pilot farmers’ first discussion group meeting sparked new ideas

The Finnish pilot farms of ReGen AGRI project gathered live for the first time in Västankvarn on June 11th.  The day consisted of an inspiring lecture by regenerative farming specialist Joel Williams, observations of the on-going regen agri field trials at the host farm and exchange of experience with other farmers.

This highly engaging training day provided deep, insightful information on topics such as identifying the actual nutrient needs of plants and correcting potential deficiencies while keeping costs in control. We reflected on how much it truly pays off to invest in nitrogen fertilization to increase or maintain yields with current crop varieties, and which forms of nitrogen the plant can utilize most efficiently.

Is it more economically viable to systematically invest in improving soil health and implement a low-input model for fertilization and plant protection—allowing for greater control over total input costs—versus aiming for a higher or identical yield with a high-input model, where options to influence the final harvest price remain very limited? The topics of the day certainly sparked lively discussion, as the buzz of conversation during coffee and lunch breaks was absolutely deafening! After the event, our pilot farmers shared their key findings and ideas what regen agri practises they could try on their own farms during the project.
