Confirmed keynote speaker: Marta Ruiz

We are happy to share our first keynote speaker at our final conference; Marta Ruiz. She is an Associate Professional Secretary at HELCOM, working on marine litter, underwater noise and non-indigenous species issues. Regarding marine litter, she currently provides support on monitoring and assessment, and on the implementation of the HELCOM Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter. Marta holds a PhD in the field of marine sciences. At our conference, she will share HELCOM work on marine litter in the Baltic Sea.


The Re:Fish project, funded by the EU Interreg Central Baltic Programme, has been ongoing for 3 years in Sweden, Estonia and Finland and is closing in February 2026. Sweden is the lead in the project. The purpose of the project has been to improve the coastal and marine environment in the Baltic Sea. It has conducted retrieval operations of sport fisherman nets and lost fishing gear, collected end-of-life gear, acquired of knowledge by using citizen science, conducted tests with deposit systems and carried out awareness raising campaigns about the problems with ghost fishing and lost fishing gear. The final conference is on the 20th of November 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia and online.
