Espoo shows cycling traffic volume on screens in Tapiola and Otaniemi

As a part of the Cycle4Climate project, the City of Espoo introduced real-time cycling traffic display screens in the Tapiola and Otaniemi neighbourhoods in late 2025. The screens, located on Tapionraitti and Kuusisaarentie roads, show cyclists the daily and yearly number of people who have cycled past. The two-year pilot was implemented by Nodeon Finland Oy.
Espoo has been monitoring the volume of cycling traffic for a long time, and the new counters and screens complement the older counter network. The initiative supports Espoo’s 2030 carbon neutrality target, as transport makes up a significant share of the city’s CO₂ emissions. Around 9 % of all travel in Espoo is already done by bicycle, and the city is actively investing in cycling infrastructure to grow that figure.
The screens’ purpose is to make cycling volumes visible in the streetscape is one concrete way the project influences travel behaviour, nudging people towards choosing cycling as an everyday mode of transport.
