Estonian and Finnish farmers learned Latvian sustainable silage management practices

The Sustainable Silage project’s pilot farmers took part in a exchange of experience visit to Western Latvia from September 29 to October 1, 2025. During the trip, participants visited a Wagyu beef cattle farm with 500 animals, which also collaborates with top chefs from Japan. The farm is continuously investing in development and seeking more profitable opportunities for direct sales. On the final day of the trip, the group visited a Hereford beef cattle farm run by a Danish farmer who moved to Latvia 25 years ago. Today, the farm has 600 animals and its own slaughterhouse. The programme also included visits to a sheep farm with 2,500 animals and a dairy farm’s maize field, where the expected yield is 45 tons per hectare. Producers noted that due to poor weather conditions, they will have to limit themselves to only three cuts when producing grass silage this year.
