Exchange Visit to Latvia: Exploring Experience-Based Tourism in Vidzeme and Latgale
During the Latvian study visit, partners explored practical examples of how experience-based tourism is developed in Vidzeme and Latgale.
From 23–25 March 2026, partners and programme participants from Estonia and Finland took part in a study visit across Vidzeme and Latgale, Latvia, organised within the Scaling Experiences project.
The programme started in Vidzeme, where participants visited businesses that demonstrate how local heritage and skills can be turned into visitor experiences. At Vienkoci Park, traditional woodcraft is combined with storytelling and hands-on activities. At Restaurant Cooks House, gastronomy is built around seasonal ingredients, sustainability, and atmosphere. The visit to Ligatne Paper Mill showed how a historic site can be transformed into a creative and cultural destination.
The day concluded with a stay at Jumurda Manor, offering insight into how accommodation can be combined with atmosphere, history, and nature. The following day, participants visited PLŪKT, where tea production is presented as a sensory and storytelling-based experience.
The study visit continued in Latgale, starting with Rekova Mill and Kotiņi farm. Here, participants experienced how local food traditions are presented through participation, with visitors actively involved in tastings, preparation, and learning about local products. Further visits included Latgale Smakovka Distillery and Restaurant “We Know”, showcasing how traditions can be presented in a modern and engaging way. On the following day, at KUUP Coffee Roastery, participants explored how storytelling adds value to everyday products, while Luznava Manor demonstrated how culture and history can be combined into a complete visitor experience.
The visit also included active exchange between participants. Discussions focused on developing experience-based products, increasing visitor involvement, and strengthening cooperation between regions. Participants shared practical examples and reflected on how these approaches could be applied in their own businesses.
The Latvian study visit provided practical insights into how experience-based tourism is developed in Vidzeme and Latgale. It highlighted how local knowledge, creativity, and a clear understanding of visitor needs can be used to create meaningful and engaging experiences. The visit also strengthened cooperation between partners and supported further development of the Scaling Experiences project.Participants also expressed strong appreciation for the study visit, highlighting it as engaging, inspiring, and valuable for their future development.
