Exploring AI as Support for Young People

As part of the CHAMP project, we conducted a pilot study to explore how young people experience an AI-based support chat and whether it can complement human support services.

A small group of upper secondary school students tested a chatbot developed by Illusian in collaboration with Kollektivet Sekasin. The students interacted with the AI in different scenarios, such as stress, loneliness, and seeking help, followed by a survey and group discussion.

The results show that AI has potential as a low-threshold support tool. Students appreciated the quick responses and ease of use, and some highlighted that it may feel easier to reach out to AI than to a person in certain situations.

At the same time, clear limitations emerged. The chatbot was often perceived as repetitive and lacking depth, and many participants felt that it could not replace human empathy, especially in more complex or emotional situations.

Overall, the pilot suggests that AI can play a role as a first step or complementary support, but not as a substitute for human interaction.
