From Symptoms to Support

Living with Parkinson’s Disease: Information, Support, and Community

The DiMod project has also gained visibility in Estonia through a national television channel. Project partner Tiia Zeigo from the Estonian Parkinson’s Association (Eesti Parkinsoniliit) appeared in a programme that presents the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease before diagnosis in a humane and relatable way. The programme also explains the physiological basis of Parkinson’s disease, discusses the changes that a diagnosis can bring to a person’s life, and highlights the concerns and fears that may be associated with the future. In addition, the video showcases the exemplary work of the Parkinson’s Association in Tartu, Estonia.

The programme is a good example of one form of peer support. Sharing experiences and hearing stories that others can relate to can provide people living with Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones with information, hope, and a sense that they do not have to face the situation alone.
