New mobility solutions we are moving forward with
The SuRuMo project aims to develop a digital solution to make existing transport options in the pilot sites more visible and accessible, so that more people can use them. A core principle of the project is to co-develop the solution together with the residents of the pilot sites, addressing their needs and preferences as far as possible within the scope and budget limitations of the project.
To this end, we have conducted surveys and held workshops in the pilot areas. After identifying and reviewing all the local needs, we have now decided which mobility solutions we will move forward with and include in the digital platform. The platform will also display available public transport — and in Sweden, it will also be linked to information about and booking of the existing on-demand public transport.

Different needs, different solutions: Sweden and Latvia tailor mobility approaches
In Sweden, the focus will be on making existing transport options more visible through the app (Freelway) — such as private cars available for carpooling and school buses that can be used for shared rides.
In Latvia, the emphasis will be on developing and implementing on-demand transport solutions.
Both approaches have been chosen based on insights gathered from interviews and workshops with residents in the pilot areas. The aim is to respond as closely as possible to local needs and preferences, within the project’s scope and budget.
On-demand transport is a cost-effective, community-oriented alternative to both traditional public transport and taxis. It allows passengers to request a ride when they need it, rather than following a fixed schedule or route. These services are typically booked via a mobile app, website, or phone call, and are particularly suited to rural areas with limited or no regular public transport options.
By tailoring the solutions to each region’s unique context, SuRuMo supports smarter and more inclusive mobility for everyone.
