Sustainable Silage project field-day and seminar in Latvia

On October 10, 2023, a seminar “How to Get Good Corn Silage” took place in Vecauce Castle, Latvia within the framework of the project “Sustainable Silage”, followed by a field day in farm “Līgotnes”.

At the seminar lector Anna Prohorova gave a presentation on the basic principles of corn cultivation and the choice of varieties in Latvia. The silage expert Ieva Krakopa shared the experience, how to ensure good quality of corn silage. The silage technology expert Pēteris Dambergs spoke about the challenges in the preparation of corn silage. The last presentation of the seminar was given by Ērika Freimane and Inese Rafaela, where they shared their experience about corn silage production in the farm “Vecauce” Ltd this year and about the latest variety offered by the company “Rapool”. After the seminar the participants went to the dairy farm “Līgotnes”, where a field day was held. The farmers got acquainted with corn seeding techniques and monitored the silage preparation in action – how corn is tamped in and corn silage layers made in the tunnel. Project experts evaluated the quality of the silage and the corn shredders were demonstrated.
