Transport on Demand Used More Than 100 Times in Lapsas During Its First Month
Riga Planning Region (RPR) launched its first Transport on Demand (TOD) pilot services in Lapsas, Mārupe Municipality, and Dzērumi, Ķekava Municipality, as part of the SuRuMo project.
In Lapsas, the service connected residents with destinations including Piņķi, Babīte, Jaunmārupe and Mārupe. During the pilot, residents could use the service free of charge between 04:00 and 23:00 by booking through the Freelway App in advance.
During the first month, residents used the service more than 100 times, covering a total of 1,400 kilometres. The average journey was 14 kilometres, with trips mainly serving access to public transport connections, railway stations, shops, educational institutions and other everyday destinations.
According to RPR, demand was highest on weekdays between 07:00 and 18:00, and interest in the service continued to grow. The pilot aimed to improve access to essential services and transport connections for residents in areas where conventional public transport options were limited.
Alongside TOD, carpooling was being tested in five RPR pilot territories: Ķemeri, Lapsas, Dzērumi, Lēdurga and Saulkalne. Both solutions formed part of SuRuMo – Sustainable Rural Mobility, funded by the Interreg Central Baltic Programme. The pilot results would help assess the costs and benefits of these mobility solutions and their potential for longer-term use.
