Two new deals in Greater Bay Area for Finnish Arctic Biomaterials
“The ultimate trust is built face to face.” That’s how Lauri Hokkanen at Arctic Biomaterials sums up what it took to secure deals with two of the largest orthopedic and medtech companies in the Greater Bay Area. In a world where most business happens through screens, the small Finnish team decided to show up in person. It paid off.

Arctic Biomaterials develops bioresorbable screws, plates and other implants for orthopedic use. Their material is both strong and bioactive, which makes it a compelling alternative for patients who would otherwise need a second surgery to remove traditional metal implants. It’s advanced medtech from a small Finnish team – and now it’s heading to one of the world’s fastest-growing healthcare markets.
“Even though the world is online, I feel that the ultimate trust is built in offline meetings, face to face. That was the difference maker for us,” says Lauri Hokkanen at Arctic Biomaterials.

Getting to that point, however, required the right connections. As a small company, Arctic Biomaterials doesn’t have the resources to build networks in every corner of the world. That’s where Leap4Growth came in. Through the programme, the team gained direct access to relevant prospects in the Greater Bay Area. Saving significant time and resources that they simply couldn’t have spent on their own.
“We don’t have the possibilities to be experts all around the globe. Utilizing the project’s support was incredibly valuable,” Lauri says.
One thing that caught him off guard? The speed. “Project evaluations move much quicker than what we’re used to in Europe,” he notes, a welcome surprise for a company ready to move fast.
