SmartSpec

Rural and sparsely populated areas in the Central Baltic region face challenges in providing equal access to specialist healthcare due to limited specialist capacity, long travel distances and difficulties recruiting healthcare professionals. SmartSpec addresses these challenges by developing a transferable model for digiphysical clinics that combine local healthcare services with remote specialist expertise.

Through cooperation between Sweden and Latvia, the project will identify the organisational, technical and legal requirements for implementation. The project will co create, test and validate a scalable model and implementation plan to help healthcare organisations improve access to specialist care, reduce unnecessary travel, strengthen continuity of care and use resources more efficiently.

Expected results

The project will develop, test, and validate a transferable model for digiphysical clinics that combines local healthcare services with remote specialist expertise. The project will also produce a practical implementation plan describing workflows, technical requirements, governance structures, and resource needs to support future implementation in healthcare organisations.

The project will contribute to more equal access to specialist healthcare across the Central Baltic region, particularly in rural and sparsely populated areas. Through cross-border cooperation between Sweden and Latvia, the project will create a scalable and adaptable solution that improves continuity of care, reduces unnecessary travel, and enables more efficient use of healthcare resources. By testing the model in different healthcare systems, the project will strengthen its long-term relevance, transferability, and impact beyond the partner regions.
