EASWork Project: Learning from Industry Leaders in Employee Support
The EASWork project is now moving into a new phase as we are starting the collaboration with companies. As part of this initiative, we visited the renowned mobile game developer, Supercell, perhaps not so much to provide assistance but to gain invaluable insights from their exemplary support system for international employees.
During our visit, we had the pleasure of meeting with Melanie Dower from Supercell’s relocation and support service. Melanie’s wealth of experience and innovative ideas provided us with a comprehensive understanding of how companies can better support their international workforce. She highlighted numerous strategies that can be implemented, even by companies that may not have the extensive resources of Supercell.
One of the key takeaways from today’s meeting with Melanie’s was the importance of not only hiring international talent but also ensuring their successful integration into Finnish society, to make sure they stay. She emphasised that support must go beyond the workplace, encompassing various aspects of daily life and providing support for the spouses to make sure that the whole family feels at home in Finland
Melanie shared several practical ideas, such as:
Comprehensive Relocation Assistance: Offering services that assist with housing, navigating the local education system, and understanding healthcare options.
Cultural Integration Programs: Providing language classes, cultural orientation workshops, and community-building activities to help international employees and their families feel at home.
Ongoing Support Networks: Establishing support groups and programs to offer continued assistance and a sense of community within the company.
But more importantly perhaps, she shared her own experience as a non-Finnish speaker, when the company made it a policy that everyone should speak English, not just in meetings but much more impactful, in between meetings to make sure everyone feels included. This is a great example of what a company can do totally free of charge.
Our visit to Supercell underscored the significant impact that thoughtful and comprehensive support can have on the retention and satisfaction of international employees. As we integrate these learnings into the EASWork project, we are excited to collaborate with more companies to develop and implement effective support systems that benefit both the employees and the broader organisation.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore best practices and innovative approaches in supporting international talent. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for all.
