Introducing the project crew – Suomenlinnan Liikenne

Suomenlinnan Liikenne Oy (SLL) is a subsidiary to Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy – Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd which identifies as it’s role to facilitate the sustainable growth of the Helsinki metropolitan area by building a rail network for the city of the future and keeping it moving. Responsibility for the building of public transport infrastructure and the operation of metro trains and trams is accompanied by city bike service and operation of Suomenlinna ferry service. Ferry operations yearly sum up to 42 000 departures and 110 000 kilometres.

SLL has existed since 1950 and has developed alongside the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, from former restricted entry military area to now a popular UNESCO world Heritage site, but also the most Southern part of Helsinki city with it’s 800 inhabitants. Transport needs of the inhabitants and visitors are met by four ferries that operate from 6 am. to 02.30 am.

REISFER participation mainly involves target vessels Suomenlinna 2 crew, masters and engineers, as well as managing director from the office. Our main focus is to facilitate learning – we need more knowledge on our vessels performance in various situations to be able to make better decisions on vessel desing, planning and operatios related issues. Main tasks include data gathering, analysis and implementation of feedback system to master on vessels efficient use of energy.

Rapidly closing decision making on technical steps on how to reach carbon neutrality in ferry operations needs more deeper understanding, not just on technical matters, but also on effects of the climate change. In Helsinki region we have to be prepared for ice going conditions, but is this changing, and how?  There are indicatios that yearly time we need ice going capabilities is shortening, but they may also be getting more demanding. Desing choices made now for newbuilds have to be correct for atleast few decades.

As an operator on a ferry line that is greatly turism focused, we strongly feel the need to make our customers feel, that their visit does not burden environment and, therefore, they are free to enjoy their vistit fully. The need to be able to provide customers with responsible option to commute is a must in the future.

Sharing information and experiences is important – it is the only way we can keep up with the rapid changes when we don’t have enough opportunities to learn from our own actions. Sharing is caring.
