Season’s Greetings – for TransFarm project the year 2024 was a year of active progress!
During the present year the project partners from Estonia and Sweden finalized their demo systems for studying, developing and promoting the Aquaponic farming system. Each demo system is unique, so different means and measures to find the optimized system balance has been used. Currently both partners are investigating how to use rainwater as a water source for their aquaponic systems. The third TransFarm demo system located in Latvia is expected to be finalized in early 2025. In addition to demo systems, the Latvian project partner has produced altogether three guiding documents about the key elements of an aquaponic farming system – the water, the fish and the plants. These documents, produced in cooperation with all project partners, can be found on the project website. These interesting guides are published in English, but also in each of the national languages.
Reducing substantially the usage of fresh water and wasting of valuable nutrients
TransFarm project aims to foster the spread and adoption of closed circular soilless farming methods, such as the aquaponics, which is a farming method where fish and vegetables are grown indoors in closed circle symbiosis. With aquaponic farming one can harvest vegetables and fish all year-round, grown in controlled and safe environment.
TransFarm project is implemented by a consortium coordinated by Finland Futures Research Centre at University of Turku. Other project partners are NVAA and Coompanion Roslagen & Norrort (Norrtälje, Sweden), University of Latvia (Riga, Latvia) and Estonian University of Life Science (Tartu, Estonia). Project duration is three years starting from March 2023 and the overall budget is 1.87 million euro, of which EU financing covers 1.5 million euro. TransFarm project is funded by EUs Interreg Central Baltic programme.
