Finnish and Estonian farmers got to know the Latvian breeding sector
From October 15th to 17th, 2024 Finnish and Estonian farmers visited Latvia in the framework of project BreedExpo2. During the visit, farmers visited sheep breeding farm SIA “Mikaitas”, where the owners Aija Šneidere and Jānis Miķelsons showed the sheep sheds. Group members observed the flocks of sheep in the pastures and discussed the nuances of sheep breeding. While visiting the dairy farm “Mazdzervītes”, its owner Jānis Ločmelis showed his Finnish and Estonian colleagues the sheds of calves and dairy cows and discussed the specifics of the Latvian milk market. While visiting the full-cycle farm of Ltd. “Vecsiljāņi”, its manager Reinholds Sprukulis showed the calf and milking cow shed, also the feed production and biomethane production plant and the cheese production unit. Participants visited also the Cattle Auction House, where its manager Kaspars Ādams talked about the situation of the beef cattle market in Latvia and Europe. The tour ended with a visit to Ltd. “Lāses AM”, where beef cattle of various breeds and cattle sheds were viewed, and at the end of the day the owner Dace Meldere organized a steak tasting.
