How can we increase circularity without compromising safety?

Within the Waste to Value project, stakeholders across the Central Baltic region collaborate to strengthen knowledge and cooperation on sustainable material and waste management.

Waste to Value event in Eskilstuna: focus on waste and hazardous waste

As part of the Waste to Value project, stakeholders gathered in Eskilstuna on 25 March to increase knowledge about waste, hazardous waste, and safe handling in a circular economy.

The event addressed the fundamental question of what is actually considered waste. According to legislation, waste is any substance or object that the holder discards, intends to discard, or is required to discard. At the same time, certain materials can be reused or classified as by-products, enabling continued circulation of resources.

A special focus was placed on hazardous waste in construction and demolition contexts. Participants were presented with examples of materials that may contain harmful substances, such as asbestos and PCB, and the risks these pose to human health and the environment.

The event highlighted the importance of combining reuse practices with thorough inventories and risk assessments. By increasing knowledge and cooperation among stakeholders, the project contributes to a safe and sustainable transition towards greater circularity in the Central Baltic region.

The participants also discussed reuse and waste before and after the event.
