Introducing the project crew – Government of Åland
The Government of Åland (GoA), as the governing body of the autonomous Swedish-speaking region of Finland, together with its’ administration, is – among other areas – responsible for the transport connections in the region. There are both ferries and cable-ferries servicing the area on multiple routes.
Although majority of Ålands’ population lives in Mariehamn, there are over 2000 people living on the numerous islands. Besides providing vital connection to permanent inhabitants, Åland Islands are a popular tourist destination.
The region undoubtedly has a rich maritime heritage, and GoA brings that expertise to the REISFER project. Åland has significant experience in advancing sustainable maritime solutions. The region has been actively involved in initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping and has supported projects aimed at improving energy efficiency in the transport sector. These competencies align seamlessly with REISFER’s goals to reduce CO2 emissions by 10-20% in ferry traffic across the Central Baltic region.
For the Government of Åland, REISFER represents an opportunity to take concrete steps toward a greener future for ferry transport. Over the course of the project several ferries will be equipped with the fuel monitoring systems to better optimise the energy consumption, possibilities towards electric ferries will be explored and eco-driving training principles will be set and trainings conducted. Decarbonization is not just an ambition—it is a necessity for maintaining the environmental and economic well-being of island communities. The Åland Islands see the future of the ferry industry as one driven by innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability. Through REISFER, the government aims to contribute policy insights and regional expertise to advance the adoption of low-emission technologies, making Åland a pioneer in sustainable maritime transport.
As a partner in REISFER, the Government of Åland is proud to collaborate with other regions in shaping the future of ferry transport and demonstrating that sustainable solutions can benefit both people and the planet.
