Digitalization and Sustainability Goals Driving Global Transformation in the Transport Sector

Digitalization and sustainability goals have propelled the global transformation of the transport sector forward at an accelerating pace in every corner of the world. The international business opportunities arising from these goals offer significant potential for Finnish and Estonian industry players in the coming decades.

Launching from small domestic markets requires collaboration between companies and public entities. Sustainable and digital transport solutions must be viewed as a whole, based on customer needs and challenges. The idea of creating joint offerings in the intelligent transport sector has been a topic of discussion in both Estonia and Finland. To initiate this work, ITS Finland and ITS Estonia, with support from the Estonian Embassy, organized the first workshop focused on joint offerings in November. The aim was to develop a comprehensive overview of the expertise in the transport sector, emphasizing customer-centricity.

A Matrix for Aligning Customers and Solutions in Intelligent Transport

The first phase of the workshop focused on identifying key target customers essential for developing the intelligent transport sector and creating a general overview of the industry’s offerings.

The resulting matrix, though not exhaustive, showcases the breadth of expertise in the intelligent transport sector at a glance, even in the early stages of development. In the next phase, participants worked on creating comprehensive offerings for specific customer segments. The workshop’s outcome included detailed packages addressing various areas such as multimodal solutions for different customer groups, the digital logistics value chain, national security, and services related to air traffic.

What’s Next?

As networks in the intelligent transport sector, ITS Finland and ITS Estonia will continue to play a role in advancing the development, communication, and commercialization of joint offerings. The next steps include refining solution and service packages to enable concrete international business opportunities. These will be integrated into industry marketing communications and international trade promotion events.

To advance the joint offering initiative, ITS Finland will organize the next workshop during the Growth Forum on January 23, 2025, at the Pörssitalo. Additionally, collaborative efforts with ITS Estonia will continue in spring 2025, supported by the Finnish Embassy in Tallinn. A practical opportunity to test these joint offerings will occur during a delegation trip to the United Kingdom in March 2025.
