Rural-UP brings together ambitious rural SMEs for international growth

The application phase of the Rural-UP project has concluded, and  32 companies have been selected to enter a 12-month scaling programme.

As part of the Rural-UP programme (Rural Enterprise Expansion Initiative), a group of ambitious small businesses from Estonia, Latvia, and Finland has been selected under the leadership of the Latvian lead partner. These companies are ready to expand their operations and enter international markets. Although each company has its own unique identity, clear common traits and goals emerge among the selected participants.

What is the profile of the selected companies?

The selected SMEs form a diverse yet clearly defined group, combining local resource-based production, innovation, and strong export potential.

Their shared characteristics include:

  • Strong local roots: Companies rely on locally sourced raw materials and create high-value products ranging from food and beverage products to packaging, design, tourism-related, and other rural value-added products.
  • Diversified business models: Many combine production with tourism, services, and direct sales, creating resilient and multi-layered business ecosystems.
  • Clear growth orientation: Most participants have validated their products in local markets and are now focused on scaling and expanding internationally.
  • Focus on innovation: Companies actively invest in product development, digitalisation, and sustainable production methods.
  • Collaboration readiness: There is a strong willingness to build partnerships, engage new suppliers, and develop international networks.

What challenges are they addressing through the programme?

Many participating SMEs have reached a stage where local markets are no longer sufficient, and structured support is needed for the next growth phase. Through Rural-UP, they aim to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Revenue growth and improved profitability
  • Entry into new export markets and establishment of distribution partnerships
  • Product and service development, including improving existing offerings or developing new ones
  • Securing investments or additional funding
  • Adoption or improvement of e-commerce and digital solutions
  • Implementation of sustainable solutions
  • Engagement of new partners and suppliers
  • Improved visibility and brand recognition
  • Team development

Conclusion

The companies participating in the Rural-UP programme represent a new generation of rural entrepreneurs—combining local heritage, innovation, and a strong ambition to grow beyond their current markets. Through mentoring, training, and international collaboration, they are well-positioned to become competitive and scalable businesses across the Central Baltic region.

This activity was supported as part of RURAL-UP, an Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021-2027 project co-funded by the European Union.
