Sustainable Flow Project Contributing to a Greener, More Resilient Future for the West Coast of Finland

The Sustainable Flow was among the projects featured in the event “Länsirannikko on huoltovarmuuskeskittymä” (The West Coast is a Security of Supply Hub) and the Maritime Logistics Research Forum, both held on May 6, 2025, at the SAMK Campus Rauma. The event gathered experts, decision-makers, and business representatives to discuss the strategic importance of Finland’s West Coast in national preparedness and resilience.

The event consisted of seminars, a guided tour of the maritime simulator, and the Maritime Logistics Research Forum. All the ongoing Maritime Logistics Research Centre’s projects, including Sustainable Flow, were presented in the research forum from the perspective of security of supply. The day highlighted the need for cross-sectoral collaboration, shared preparedness actions, and innovation to reinforce Finland’s security of supply.

Smart and Sustainable Maritime Resilience

Sustainable Flow contributed to the discussion by presenting how green transition and smart logistics solutions can support long-term resilience. Project representative Hanna Kajander (SAMK) introduced specific measures, including solar panel investments in seven pilot ports, digital CO₂ calculation tools for informed decision-making, and energy-efficient port operations. These actions aim to both reduce environmental impact and enhance the operational capacity of ports in times of disruption.

Life and business in the Central Baltic countries are extremely dependent on the Baltic Sea for the transportation of goods. Sustainable Flow underscores the notion that a functioning economy and resilient infrastructure form the basis of national preparedness. The project demonstrates that environmental sustainability and security of supply can go hand in hand in building a greener and stronger future. Projects like Sustainable Flow play a crucial role in promoting an environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially sustainable maritime sector. By supporting the sector’s adaptation to climate change, projects like Sustainable Flow help enhance its overall resilience and long-term sustainability.
