TransFarm project has ended!
TransFarm (Transborder Cooperation for Circular Soilless Farming Systems) projects duration has officially ended on February 28th 2026. The last working day for TransFarm teams was on Friday February 27th. The work with aquaponic farming and with project management still continues in many ways.
The TransFarm project aimed to support and promote the spread and adoption of closed circular soilless farming methods, such as Aquaponics, which is a farming method where fish and vegetables are grown indoors in a closed symbiotic circulated system. Target was to reduce substantially the usage of fresh water and the wasting of valuable nutrients. With aquaponic farming one can harvest vegetables and fish all year-round – grown in controlled and safe environment, without any pesticides or nutrient losses, and consuming only 10 per cent of potable water when compared to traditional irrigation.
Free materials on aquaponic system available
Main results of the project include several guiding reports about water management and selection of fish and plants in the aquaponic system. The reports are published in several languages and can be freely utilized by anyone interested in starting an aquaponic farming system. In addition, project publications include also several guiding materials related to construction and monitoring of the aquaponic system, and to the business side of the aquaponic farming and food markets. All these project materials can be found on Central Baltic’s webspace.
Another important results of the TransFarm project are those three aquaponic demo systems that are built in Sweden, Estonia and Latvia. These systems will be used for educational purposes for a long time after the project has ended.
