Despite regulations, the Baltic Sea continues to be polluted by several hazardous substances every year. It is not easy to identify what can be done regionally, of added value to existing regulations, to reduce such inputs. There are 6-7 general sectors where chemicals are used.
ESTRADI will focus on one of these sectors, that of industrial products. During the project, different types of stakeholders will implement pilots aiming to reduce inputs of certain identified priority pollutants. The pilots will also target different parts of the life cycle of industrial products where these chemicals are used.
The project’s approach is expected to achieve reduction of environmental inputs at a number of sources of some of the recently agreed priority pollutants for the Baltic Sea.
It will also allow to derive lessons about the most effective and resource (time, cost) efficient modes of action. National authorities can later utilize this knowledge to consider and initiate a standard set of preferred coordinated measures every time a substance used in widespread industrial products becomes prioritized regionally. In that way, they can promote and support the identified by the project enhanced stakeholder roles in reducing inputs to the Baltic Sea.
