Background

The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s most vulnerable seas, yet public awareness of its ecosystems and the impacts of human activities remains limited. BaLiSEdu strengthens marine literacy in Finland, Estonia and Latvia by bringing together marine research institutes and Environmental and Nature Education Centres (ENECs). The project translates up-to-date scientific knowledge into accessible educational materials and develops a Marine Educational Package (MEP) for use by ENECs and other educators.

By sharing knowledge, materials and best practices across borders, BaLiSEdu aims to strengthen marine education, raise awareness of the Baltic Sea and encourage more responsible action for its future.

Long-term impact

BaLiSEdu aims to ensure that its results remain in active use well beyond the project. The Marine Educational Packages (MEPs) developed in Finland, Estonia and Latvia will become part of the educational activities of participating ENECs and will also be available for wider non-commercial use.

Syke will maintain the Baltic Sea Literacy platform and the electronic repository of educational materials, helping to ensure continued access to the materials after the project ends.

The materials will also be shared beyond the project partnership to support their wider use and adaptation across the Baltic Sea region. In the longer term, BaLiSEdu aims to strengthen cooperation around Baltic Sea literacy and contribute to the development of a Baltic Sea Literacy partnership, with the MEP providing a foundation for its educational toolkit.
