SOSREW project (Sustainable Organic Sorbents from Recycled and Waste Wool) funded by Interreg Central Baltic promotes circular economy and regional resilience by utilising locally available, currently wasted materials, raw wool and recycled wool, for their natural oil sorption properties. The project aims to reduce the amount of virgin wool, recycled wool, and wool production side streams ending up as waste by developing bio-based oil sorbents to replace plastic-based alternatives in Finland and Estonia. The goal is to utilise design methods to build up a new solution for valorization of raw materials and circulation adaptable in all countries around the Baltic Sea.

Expected results

The SOSREW project will develop and pilot two circular service models for the collection, recycling, cleaning, and further processing of raw wool and recycled wool textiles. By connecting producers, recyclers, logistics operators, and end-users across Finland and Estonia, the project aims to significantly reduce wool waste and strengthen the regional wool value chain.
Through co-design methods, material testing, prototyping, and field validation, SOSREW will create sustainable service models to produce wool-based alternatives to plastic-based materials. The project strengthens cross-border collaboration, promotes circular economy practices, supports new bioeconomy business opportunities, and contributes to EU sustainability goals by advancing reusable, durable, and potentially compostable wool-based solutions.
