The organic area in the BSR/CB region has expanded over the last decades, though unevenly across countries. However, the horticultural sector has not fully kept pace with other organic sectors, and in recent years, the number of organic horticultural farms in Estonia, Latvia, and Finland, has begun to decline, with too few new entrants. The aim of the project Scaling Organic is to address this decline by strengthening the capacity of young horticultural SMEs to scale up their businesses through sustainable practices, product innovation, and expanded market reach. The project will produce individual growth roadmaps for ca 30 SMEs, a scaling-up programme incl. training, mentoring, and cross-border networking, impact assessment reports, and practical guidelines for scaling up. These will directly benefit the participating SMEs, and more widely, advisory services, farmer associations, municipalities, and caterers who gain tools to integrate more organic products into supply chains.
The expected change is that at least 20 SMEs from three countries will demonstrate real business growth—through transitioning to organic/regenerative farming, increasing volumes and value-added processing, accessing new customer groups, and building stronger value chains. Bringing together producers, processors, and advisors from three countries strengthens value chains, encourages partnerships, and fosters economies of scale that individual SMEs might not achieve domestically. Cross-border cooperation exposes SMEs to new clients, distributors, and export channels, helping them diversify sales and reduce dependency on local or raw-material markets.
