Join the consultation on the cross-border dimension of the Skills Portability Initiative

Do you have suggestions on how to improve the recognition of qualifications across borders? The Central Baltic programme would like to invite our project partners and beneficiaries to take part in the European Commission consultation aiming to remove barriers to the free movement of workers related to skills and qualifications.

Many companies and workers take part in the Central Baltic programme projects as beneficiaries. The companies are going to new markets together, taking steps to achieve the next level in their business development and contributing to improving the competitiveness of their potential employees. The workers are learning new skills and exploring the possibilities of cross-border working. No doubt that both beneficiaries and project partners can have valuable insights into practicalities of cross-border work life.

The European Commission would like to hear the experiences of workers applying for jobs cross-borders and employers hiring workers who obtained their skills and qualifications in another Member State or outside the EU. National/regional/local authorities concerned with qualifications and skills are welcome too.

A consultation session will take place online on 16 January 2026.

Register before 12 January (12:00 CET) to join the online meeting of European stakeholders on the cross-border dimension of the EU Skills Portability Initiative.

When: 16 January 2026, 10:30 – 12:00 CET
Where: Online (Webex link will be shared on 13 January, upon successful registration)

Main questions to be discussed and used to inform the formulation of EU Skills Portability Initiative:

  • What would you want EU policymakers working on the Skills Portability Initiative to take into account from the perspective of cross-border regions?
  • What are, in your experience, the key obstacles to free movement of workers, namely in the form of cross-border commuting, related to the acceptance, recognition and transparency of skills and qualifications?

Recognition of qualifications from non-EU countries is on the agenda also.
