Age is just a number: How Silver Strategies is redefining the workplace

In an era characterized by an ageing workforce coupled with a notable shortage of labour, the Silver Strategies project emerges as an innovation and potential solution. Designed to elevate the employment landscape for those aged 55 and above, this collaborative initiative goes further. It aims to craft transformative anti-discrimination strategies for Central Baltic companies in Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. There are various potential benefits: while individuals in the silver age group experience enhanced job opportunities, companies benefit from the vast reservoir of experience and wisdom this demographic offers. Moreover, society at large reaps the rewards of an inclusive approach, and the economy stands to benefit from a diversified and enriched workforce.

Pillars of Silver Strategies:

With a diverse array of features, the project emphasises:

  • Developing joint strategies to facilitate the recruitment and retention of silver age employees.
  • Instituting anti-discrimination measures across 36 companies.
  • Launching a joint training programme for company managers, HR professionals, coaches, and consultants.
  • Hosting training events that foster expertise-sharing.
  • Developing and publishing an online Handbook to serve as a valuable resource.

While individuals of the silver age stand central, benefiting from enhanced employment opportunities, the ripple effect of the project is extensive. SMEs, corporations, the wider labour market, and business support organisations all stand to benefit. The cross-border approach enhances regional labour market integration and promotes a spirit of cooperation.

Navigating challenges:

Businesses are at the heart of the Silver Strategies project, and many are set to reap considerable benefits. Yet, the path has its obstacles. For some companies, addressing anti-discrimination, particularly concerning those nearing or in retirement, remains a sensitive or even taboo subject that they have not addressed so far. However, Silver Strategies is dedicated to illuminate the vast potential within this demographic. By harnessing their unique strengths and experiences, businesses can turn perceived challenges into strategic assets.

Our work so far:

As the project concludes its initial phase, the completed work stands out. From comprehensive research on similar projects to stakeholder engagement and the creation of in-depth training content, the team is building a solid foundation. With the initial training session to be held in Estonia, in 2024, the team is diligently preparing materials and compiling best practices to ensure effective knowledge sharing.
