Cycle4Climate Interventions begin in Espoo with a pop-up event on winter cycling

The Cycle4Climate interventions begin in Espoo with a pop-up winter cycling event. On the international Winter Bike to Work Day, Friday 14th of February, a special event was held in Otaniemi to showcase the City of Espoo’s winter maintenance of cycling routes and development projects.

The event took place at the intersection of Otaniementie and Kuusisaarentie, where participants got to see how the city and the operators maintain bike paths during the winter months. The activity is part of the first intervention round in Espoo, which focuses on facilitating different cycling events to make the current cycling infrastructures and services more visible.

Attendees were able to explore the routes with enhanced winter maintenance and take a closer look at the equipment used for maintaining the paths. The event also provided a platform for discussions on the development of year-round cycling in Espoo, with experts from the city sharing insights into ongoing projects that aim at increasing cycling activity and promoting sustainable transport.

In Cycle4Climate, the interventions and actions in the project aim to ‘nudge’ towards year-round cycling. The cycling infrastructure and its maintenance are key in enabling winter cycling. When the infrastructure is in place, it can be supported by other means, such as up-to-date information, workplace cycling facilities, and practical know-how on winter conditions. This pop-up event highlighted the existing infrastructure and maintenance and provided a low-threshold opportunity for dialogue with a ‘bike-in’ premise.

The event was organised in collaboration with Cycle4Climate, the City of Espoo’s Public Works Department, and the Innovation Challenge Engine for Cities project.
