Silver Strategies: Enhancing HR practices with age management

On 17-18 October 2024, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) hosted a joint training session focused on age management in the workplace. The Silver Strategies workshop brought together professionals and experts to exchange insights, develop actionable strategies, and explore real-world applications of active ageing practices across diverse sectors.

Expert discussions
The event began with an expert panel titled “Widening the Horizon”, setting the stage by addressing key challenges and emerging trends in age management. Attendees gained strategic insights into the benefits of retaining an experienced workforce and discussed how to adapt these strategies to their organisations. The video from the panel discussions will be published on our channels at a later date, and we invite everyone to listen to the wide array of expert contributions.

Workshops for practical exchange
The core of the event included two interactive workshops. The first session enabled participants to share experiences, challenges, and solutions related to implementing age management practices. This knowledge-sharing highlighted effective strategies and created a collaborative environment for learning. In the afternoon, participants engaged in a session where they presented their action plans and received feedback from peers. This peer review process allowed participants to identify strengths and areas for improvement, generating new ideas and solutions.

Interactive visits at SAMK

The work environment has experienced substantial transformations, driven by technological advancements and evolving societal expectations. To highlight these changes, SAMK organised engaging visits to innovative facilities like the Peliselli simulation lab and the RoboAI Laboratory. These visits effectively demonstrated how technology can be harnessed, offering fresh perspectives and practical insights on addressing various challenges.

Day two: Company visits
The second day featured site visits to three companies. Participants first explored Länsi-Suomen Osuuspankki, a regional bank that had integrated age-friendly practices and shared these with the participants. At Enersense, a renewable energy company, participants learned about sustainability and workforce strategies. Finally, Diakon Palvelut Oy showcased age management in the healthcare sector, providing insights into supporting an ageing workforce while maintaining high-quality care and community engagement.

Community and sustainable workplace cultures
The two-day event provided participants with practical tools and a supportive network to enhance age management practices in their organisations. The most important resource is the community itself, as the participants bring a wealth of extensive knowledge and valuable industry insights. Their expertise not only enriches the discussions but also facilitates the exchange of best practices and innovative ideas. This collective wisdom creates a dynamic environment where participants can share experiences, learn from one another, and collaboratively develop solutions that are both relevant and impactful.
