The Resilient Sea addresses eutrophication in the Baltic Sea by restoring the nutrient filtering capacity of coastal ecosystems and reducing internal nutrient loading through restoration measures. The project also develops practical guidance and planning tools to help municipalities prioritize and implement effective coastal water and habitat protection, while engaging local stakeholders to strengthen coastal resilience and improve the marine environment.
The project Resilient Sea will result in:
Reduced internal phosphorus load and restored ecological ‘nutrient filter’ function of coastal bays resulting in improvements in the water and habitat quality, benefiting also the coastal biodiversity and climate. Moreover, the permanent reduction of internal load of phosphorus, up to 1000kg P, will be obtained with aluminum treatment in 2 coastal bays.
Altogether at least 10 bays are selected for project’s demo sites in Sweden, Åland and Finland. In addition, tools and methods developed in the project provide practical guidance for coastal municipalities for their future planning and environmental work, ensuring the durability of results.
