Woodworking and timber framing are traditional crafts that have been practiced in the Baltic region since ancient times. However, today there are very limited – or nearly no – opportunities to acquire these traditional carpentry skills. In addition, there is a shortage of masters who still possess this knowledge, despite the fact that wood and forests remain among the main natural resources of the Baltic region.
This creates a clear demand for traditional timber-framing competences, while no mechanisms currently exist to ensure their supply.
THE MAIN GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES IN WOODWORKING AND TRADITIONAL TIMBER FRAMING, THEREBY ENHANCING PEOPLE’S COMPETENCES IN THESE CRAFTS AND MAKING THEM COMPETITIVE AND ATTRACTIVE IN THE BALTIC LABOUR MARKET.
The project’s target audience is YOUNG PEOPLE – one of the most vulnerable and less competitive groups in employment.
Much of the traditional knowledge of master carpenters has disappeared over time. That is why cross-border collaboration became essential.
By joining forces and sharing expertise, Baltic and European master carpenters came together to make this project a reality — creating eight high-quality professional training programmes in woodworking and traditional timber framing, along with two hands-on international workshops held in Latvia and Estonia.
Thanks to this effort, 83 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE GAINED RARE, HIGHLY COMPETITIVE SKILLS IN WOODWORKING AND TRADITIONAL TIMBER FRAMING — A POWERFUL FIRST STEP TOWARD FURTHER EDUCATION AND TOWARD A HIGHLY VALUED CAREER IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND WOODWORKING INDUSTRIES IN THE BALTIC REGION!
In addition to training activities, the project team produced the educational publication
📘 “TIMBER FRAMING. PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS”,
available to everyone in English, Estonian, and Latvian, ensuring the continuation and wider accessibility of traditional craft knowledge
