People living with dementia in public residential care often experience limited access to outdoor environments. This can negatively affect quality of life and may lead to a greater use of restrictive measures, such as locked doors, to ensure safety. The project addresses the need to better understand outdoor environments as a supportive resource in dementia care. It focuses on how access to and use of outdoor spaces relates to well-being and to awareness of restrictive measures in care practices.
We will develop recommendations and implement models for dementia-friendly outdoor environments in public residential care. These will be demonstrated in showcase sites and shared through a digital platform to support knowledge exchange and replication.
The project will build an evidence base through literature review, benchmarking and expert input. Dementia-friendly outdoor environments will be piloted and documented in two residential care settings. A digital platform will be developed to share results, tools and models.
The project will strengthen knowledge and awareness of how outdoor environments can be integrated as a supportive resource in dementia care, particularly in relation to quality of life and the use of restrictive measures. By making results, models and tools accessible through a digital platform across regions, the project will facilitate cross-border knowledge exchange and capacity building.
