The project addresses the need to better understand outdoor environments as a supportive resource in dementia care. It focuses on how access to and meaningful use of outdoor spaces relate to well-being, quality of life, and the use of restrictive practices in everyday care.
The project takes a practice-oriented approach, exploring how existing environments and ways of working can be adapted to better support outdoor access. By strengthening knowledge and awareness among professionals, the project aims to contribute to more supportive, person-centred care environments.
The project will build an evidence base through literature review, benchmarking, and expert input. Dementia-friendly outdoor environments will be piloted and documented in two residential care settings.
Models, tools, and recommendations will be developed and shared through a digital platform to support knowledge exchange and wider implementation. The project will strengthen knowledge and awareness of how outdoor environments can support quality of life and reduce the use of restrictive measures.
