CLEAN Beach

Microplastics pollution is a growing threat to coastal ecosystems and public well-being across the Baltic Sea region. However, current beach microplastics monitoring methods are not adapted to the diverse types of beaches found in the region, making data comparison unreliable and impeding effective local and national response.
The CleanBeach project addresses this gap by developing harmonised, simple, and cost-effective guidelines for microplastics monitoring in beach sand. By making the method accessible and user-friendly, the project empowers both scientists and citizens to contribute to large-scale environmental monitoring efforts. CleanBeach also introduces the Rosgis app to engage the public in reporting beach litter and promote community-driven environmental action.

Expected results

The project will pilot and distribute easy-to-use sampling kits and implement the new methodology across multiple beach types, involving citizens through guided activities and digital tools. CleanBeach will improve the consistency and comparability of microplastic data across European coasts, providing a solid basis for informed environmental policies and interventions. By combining science with public engagement, the project will raise awareness, strengthen coastal stewardship, and support transnational efforts to reduce plastic pollution. Ultimately, CleanBeach will lead to cleaner beaches, healthier ecosystems, and stronger cross-border collaboration in environmental monitoring and protection.
