The Baltic Sea faces serious environmental challenges that require joint efforts across countries. Eutrophication, worsened by climate change, and the release of harmful substances are among the biggest threats to its coastal marine habitats. One source of pollution is also cargo residues, small amounts of bulk materials like coal, grain, or minerals that can remain on the quay, deck, or in cargo holds during ship operations. These residues can be discharged into the sea at various stages of loading and unloading. The CargoRes project works together with ports, port operators, and shipping companies to tackle this problem by identifying the causes and testing practical solutions to reduce cargo substances polluting the sea.
The CargoRes project helps reduce the amount of cargo residues entering the sea by improving cargo handling practices in ports and on ships. In close cooperation with ports, port operators, and shipping companies, CargoRes pilots practical solutions with partners committed to making positive changes. The project shares the lessons learned and creates clear guidelines to help others reduce pollution. Through these efforts, CargoRes contributes to protecting the Baltic Sea and promoting more sustainable maritime transport across the region.
