Young people in Finland and Sweden face growing mental health challenges, while early, low-threshold support remains limited. Anonymous support chats are increasingly popular, offering a safe space for youth to seek help, but there is a lack of structured training and quality tools for those providing support.
The CHAMP – Chat Help for Anxiety and Mental Positivity – project aims to improve and professionalise youth chat services. Led by Luckan in Finland and Swedish Red Cross Youth in Sweden, it brings together expertise from professional and volunteer-based models to enhance quality and sustainability.
CHAMP develops a pedagogical framework, training materials, and manuals for chat providers. It also creates tools to evaluate impact and pilots AI-driven features to support human-led services. Through cross-border cooperation, CHAMP builds capacity to ensure young people can access timely, effective mental health support.
The CHAMP project will result in the development of a pedagogical handbook and training manual designed for professionals and volunteers working with youth chat support services. In addition, it will produce a flexible evaluation tool that allows organisations to assess the effectiveness and impact of anonymous chat interventions.
The project will also test and document the use of AI-supported chat as a complement to human-led services, providing insights into its benefits, risks, and potential applications—particularly for times when chat staff are unavailable. These jointly developed solutions will be adopted and integrated into the regular operations of the partner organisations. In the longer term, the results will contribute to improving the quality, reach, and sustainability of youth mental health support services across the Central Baltic region.
