BalticPFASResolve

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are persistent and harmful chemicals that pose a growing threat to water quality and ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. Municipalities, water utilities, and regional authorities often lack the tools and coordinated strategies needed to effectively track and mitigate PFAS pollution. The BalticPFASResolve project was launched to address this challenge through cross-border collaboration. By combining preventive, regulatory, and technical remediation measures, the project will develop and implement practical solutions to reduce PFAS emissions into the Baltic Sea. A key innovation is the creation of a PFAS source tracking and mitigation tool tailored for local and regional authorities.

Expected results

BalticPFASResolve will empower municipalities and water utilities to identify PFAS hotspots and implement targeted remediation programmes. The project will test innovative technical solutions in stormwater and wastewater systems and promote cooperation with firefighting services, including airport rescue teams. Through joint efforts across Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia, the project will deliver scalable methods for PFAS mitigation and contribute to EU-level policy development. The long term result will be a measurable reduction in PFAS emissions into the Baltic Sea and strengthened regional capacity to address chemical pollution through shared knowledge and coordinated action.
